In conclusion, pyodermas are rare in cats. Even though the number of publications on this topic is rather limited, it is found that the prevalence of this disease may be underestimated. Similarly to dogs, pyoderma in cats is not usually a primary disease, but it is secondary in nature and may accompany many primary skin conditions. It is very common in cats suffering from allergies. As already mentioned, dermatological symptoms develop in cats according to the so called patterns yet the difficulty is that each pattern of reaction may fit any of allergies and obviously other differential diagnoses.
Therefore, it means that a veterinarian who examines a cat must carry out the detailed anamnesis and clinical examination and exclude other diseases such as fungal infections of the skin or external parasites. In our studies, although clinical data for the examined cats was not available, the conclusions based on the publications on clinical symptoms and their remission after antibiotic treatments indicated bacterial infections in the examined cats. In addition, personal experiences of the author confirm that some reaction patterns in the cat, especially eosinophilic plaque as well as miliary dermatitis, lip ulcer (indolent ulcer) and sometimes idiopathic ulcers, are often (secondarily) infected with bacteria and quite often react positively to antibiotic monotherapy, which has been also confirmed with studies by Wildermuth et al.
