Bacterial pyoderma in the cat. Studies on drug resistance in bacteria – a review of the literature
The notion pyoderma describes a bacterial infection of the skin. In cats, superficial bacterial infections are quite rare. The disease is often incorrectly diagnosed by veterinarians. Recently published results of studies have demonstrated that in the cat the ability of some staphylococcal species to adhere to the corneocytes is lower, which could explain lower prevalence of superficial pyoderma in this species (Woolley et al., 2008). However, the studies by Yi & Vogelnest (2012) showed that the prevalence of pyoderma in cats was 20%.
Superficial pyoderma may be caused by numerous bacteria, but predominantly these are the strains of S. pseudintermedius, S. aureus and S. simulans (Yu & Vogelnest, 2012).
The disease is usually secondary in nature and a bacterial infection may be accompanied by trauma, pharmacological immunosuppresion and an initial skin disease such as external parasites, hypersensitivity (allergy) or autoimmune disease. The diagnosis of pyoderma in the cat is based exclusively on a clinical examination supported by a cytological examination of a swab sampled from the lesions. The clinical picture reveals papules with or without crusts (miliary dermatitis) and lesions typical of eosinophilic granuloma complex, especially eosinophilic plaque (Fig. 1, p. 18) and eosinophilic ulcers on the lips (Fig. 2, p. 18). Ulcerative lesions are an excellent [...]
