Jak leczę… złamania wewnątrzstawowe. Cz. II
How I treat…intra-articular fractures. Part II
Distal radius
Articular fractures in this area are rare. In general, these fractures occur through the growth plate irradiating into the joint (type III Salter fracture). In the mature animal, the fracture takes place in the distal radius, which in turn may break in two, affecting the joint. The repair consists of reconstructing both fragments of the distal radius with screws or pins, fixing then this block to the radial physis also by means of pins or screws, depending on the animal age.
Carpal bones
Carpal bones are a rare site of IF, although, theoretically, any fracture in any carpal bone are intra-articular fractures.
The higher incidence of these fractures is found in race greyhounds, and are considered as „stress fractures”, this is, do not occur as consequence of external traumatism, but because of the high muscular strengths generated during the race. The typical example is the fracture of carp accessory bone. This rectangular bone has the four faces serving as origin or attachment site of strong ligaments and tendons. Two of these ligaments are intra-articular, so that when the ligament causes avulsion of bone fragments, it results in IF.
These fractures are traditionally repaired by means of intra-articular fragments removal, although internal [...]
