DNA testing – the procedure
The aforementioned diseases are inherited by means of autosomal recessive pattern.
Testing for these diseases will allow for a detection of defective gene carriers.
Genetic tests can be performed at any age: straight after birth, in adult animals or at the onset of clinical symptoms. The tests for the discussed diseases are carried out on DNA that can be isolated from the nuclear cells sampled on EDTA or from the cells sampled with buccal swabs (not with saliva).
Based on the analysis of internal data it has been established that of the total number of swabs collected from dogs and submitted to the laboratory (for testing for the defect in MDR1 gene), only 0.07% was unsuitable for testing. If a buccal swab is not qualified for testing, it is not possible to obtain an incorrect result. In such case, a person who has sent the sample is informed that it is not suitable for testing.
