Genetic diseases with neurological symptoms – an overview

Genetic tests are a novel tool for veterinarians – they enable us to determine the origin of an animal (identification of fatherhood) or whether a dog carries a gene mutation that may cause a disease in its offspring, The paper constitutes the overview of genetically determined diseases that present with neurological symptoms and provides basic information on the patterns of inheritance.

The Dog Registry

The register of purebred dogs was set up in the 19^th century after the Kennel Club in the UK (1873) and American Kennel Club (1884) had been established. Shortly afterwards a breed barrier was introduced: animals were entered into the register only if their parents were registered. The groups were becoming more and more genetically distinct and separated. Selective reproduction of individuals with such limited genetic pool resulted in a variety of phenotypically different dogs. A negative consequence is high incidence of genetically determined diseases (2). The additional elements that made some spontaneous and unfavourable mutations leading to the development of diseases persist within a given breed included breeding throughout several generations the individuals selected for specific appearance features or behavioural traits, inbreeding that was often used for creating new breeds and a lack of natural selection pressure (1, 3).
